- WORLD BUILDING TOOLS
-
-
- The category WORLD BUILDING TOOLS was created to
- include
- software products primarily, however, some of the products
- require
- hardware input devices that allow data to be entered from
- the physical world. Most world building tools are referred to
- as "modelers" or 3-D database construction tools. They
- have been designed to enable a user to design and assemble
- complex environments that contain multiple objects.
-
- There is an overabundance of these products on the market
- and we will most definitely see even more of them evolve in
- the future.
-
- These tools utilize various methods to model objects and to
- design complex systems out of the primitive object parts.
- Using wireframe, polygonal and solid shading techniques to
- display the objects, a user manipulates data points, lines and
- surfaces into place, organizing more complex constructs.
-
- Different modeling packages will output a variety of 3D
- object formats, some of which have evolved to the status of
- "standard". Virtual Reality, by virtue of its newness, has few
- standards that have been set for the exchange and transfer
- of world data.
-
- Some of the world building tools have been designed to
- operate on desktop computer platforms while the high-end
- tools work only on workstation hardware. In general, the
- high-end tools appear to have the most features, handle more
- complex 3-D databases and support standards better.
-
- Although cost is a major consideration when evaluating a
- tools for
- acquisition, desktop-platform based tools often win out in
- organizations where conservative VR budgets are the reality.
- We have attempted to list many of the world building tools
- that appear to be suited to VR-based object / scene creation
- requirements. We are positive, however, that there have
- been omissions of products and organizations that deserve to
- be listed in this category.
-
- If you or your organization are aware of a new product or
- technology that you feel should be included in further guide
- revisions, please contact us so we can list it in a forthcoming
- update.
